Course Overview

Aims and Objectives

To provide training for Lift Truck Operators, to enable them to operate the vehicle in a safe and efficient manner. To complete all testing and certification as specified in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. On successful completion of the Lift Truck Operator course the candidate will be accredited with an ITSSAR or RTITB certificate of completion, dependant on the specific Awarding Body. Training can be undertaken on a variety of Lift Truck disciplines such as Reach, Rough Terrain, Telescopic, Side Loader, Rider/Pedestrian Operated Low-Level Pallet Truck and Pivot Steer. Training can also be conducted on various plant and equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Counterbalance & Reach Forklift Truck?

Counterbalance Forklift: Has a counterweight at the back to balance heavy loads. Works in open spaces and can lift heavier loads. Less manoeuvrable in tight areas.

Reach Forklift: Designed for narrow aisles, with extendable forks to reach high shelves. Ideal for indoor use in warehouses. Lower load capacity compared to counterbalance forklifts.

What are the course durations?

The course duration will depend on your prior experience in this discipline. Below is further information:

Novice Course – 5 days in duration and for a candidate with little or no prior experience

Experienced Course – 3 days in duration and for a candidate with extensive experience in operating an FLT but do not hold a valid licence.

Conversion Course – 2 days in duration. A conversion course is a course designed to move from one Awarding Body to another – i.e. ITSSAR to RTITB.

Safety Refresher – 1 day in duration for students already in possession of a valid licence which is due to expire.

Can I operate any size of Counterbalance after gaining my accreditation?

No, the standard accreditation is only up to 5 tonnes.

How long does my FLT licence last for?

Expiry date on a FLT licence is 3 years from the date of issue. Refresher training is a must to maintain competence.
